Through this blog, I will take you with me on my reading journey.
I used to love reading when I was younger. I would always go to the library once a week and would bring as many books home as I possibly could and finish all of them in a day or two. Reading was one of my favorite things to do, but all it was, was just that, reading. Many people imagine a whole new world when reading, they really ‘live’ the story the book portrays. Some ‘feel’ the emotions that are described, I never experienced this for myself and was always wondering if I lacked imagination or if reading was just not for me anymore.
Around the age of 12, I stopped reading for fun and started watching a lot of movies and TV shows, some of which were based on books. I realized that watching situations develop suited me better than reading about them. Since I could see the setting and emotions, I could understand everything better. This made me dislike reading and from then on, I would prefer watching a story above reading them.
As I am sure I am not the only one facing this confusion, I can imagine some people disliking reading because of this too. Another reason for people, especially young adults, to dislike reading is because they are being told what to read. Many people do not have a say in what they can and cannot read, at school for example. Therefore, they have to read something they have no interest in. If they were given options, they could pick a book that sparks their interest. This would make reading less dull and could even be exciting.
I am happy about the fact that I loved to read when I was younger, this not only made me develop my reading and writing skills, but it also made me realize there are multiple views on one story. This is very important to learn when younger because it will teach people that there are many views, many opinions and many ways to interpret something. It also teaches people to respect each other’s opinions and that their own opinion is not the only right one, sometimes there is not even a ‘right opinion’.
To spark my interest in reading again, I will read 4 books which I will then analyze and write about on this page. I am excited to see how this will turn out. Will I love reading again or not? Read on to find out!
